LIGHT POLLUTION BY SOLIS

SOLIS, a successful Sydney community organisation has been working at restoring the view of a starry night sky since 1998. Some of our aims are to: Gather environmentally aware people interested in the problem of wasted energy from outdoor lighting; gather and distribute information about obtrusive lighting; build awareness of the need for dark skies and for more efficient lighting; provide individuals and astronomy groups with information that will enable them to tackle light pollution issues; initiate and participate in a debate about the environmental affects of spill light; offer advice to the solution of associated problems caused by inappropriatete liggting. Our goal is to set up an informed dialogue with lighting engineers, architects and policy makers in local, state and federal governments.

In Australia, astronomers, professionals and amateur, who stand to gain most from the benefit of the work carried out by a few individuals and groupds such as SOLIS, show little inclination in way of educating the public about the astronomical, environental and economical impact of light pollution.

SOLIS, using the Australian Standard AS 4282 "Control of the obtrusive effects of outdoor lighting" as a guide, responds to planning issues advertised by governments on all levels and, comments on Building Approvals, Development Applications and Development Control Plans that involve exterior lighting.

AS 4282 is very specific in that it deals with obtrusive lighting within residental and urbane areas, where a measurement of light on residental windows is considered, but has few references to requirements or locations of illuminated signs in rural areas. It should be noted that the Standard is not mandatory but any disregard for the requirements causing incidents which could lead to litigation obviously places the person or organisation responsible for the installation in a difficult situation.

As an pro-active membership based organisation we rely on membership fees and donations in order for us to continue educating the public, and lobby governments for the benefit of us all.

SOLIS has office expenses and the cost of maintaining the website each year.

SOLIS committee meetings take place on the Third Monday of the month at 7:30 pm at Sydney Observatory. Visitors welcome.

Pure SEO-CMS is far more suited to working with the latest web standards. Many standard routines and much of the hidden detail is automated therefore saving up to 90% of the time compared to traditional WYSIWYG editors.

Because the content is completely separate from the design it is much easier to update a complete website or use the same content in lots of different applications.

Most of the advanced features are hidden to stop unskilled users from causing problems. However, a switch within the setup window allows access to the design templates and all of the code in every page can be changed by editing the templates or default text files.
